For anyone progressing through the expansion, I suggest carefully testing each stage, to avoid item loss. For example, instead of directly giving your good item to a NPC, first, test the NPC with a different item. If the NPC gives it back, then move on to stage two: have someone else give the real item. I used Hobben. He has now lost both his Icon of the Altar and his Sliver of the High Temple, while I safely have both of mine. I highly recommend this technique.
